French Pensioner Falls Victim to Sophisticated Scam
A 79-year-old man in France was targeted by a pair of scammers who posed as police officers and convinced him to hand over a valuable collection of coins and medals.

A recent incident in Villejuif, a suburb of Paris, highlights the growing threat of sophisticated scams targeting vulnerable individuals.
When Guy, a 79-year-old man, returned home from shopping, he was approached by a man claiming to be a plumber who had been sent to fix a leak. However, Guy was unaware of any issues with his plumbing and had not requested a visit from a technician.
The supposed plumber entered Guy's home and made his way to the kitchen, where he was soon joined by two men dressed in police uniforms. They claimed that the plumber was, in fact, a thief and that they were there to apprehend him.
## A Complex Scam
The scammers' plan was to create a sense of urgency and confusion, making it difficult for Guy to question their story. They convinced him to let them inspect his home and, eventually, his safe deposit boxes.
The scammers claimed that they needed to verify the contents of the boxes and that Guy should provide them with the keys. Guy, still reeling from the revelation that the plumber was a thief, handed over the keys and allowed the scammers to inspect his home.
## The Consequences
The scammers made off with 1,800 pieces of collectible items, including 160 gold Napoleons and several medals, valued at approximately 110,000 euros.
Guy has expressed his outrage and frustration at being targeted by the scammers, stating that he feels a deep sense of anger and disappointment.
## A Growing Concern
According to Frédéric Le Coënt, secretary of the Alliance Police Nationale in Val-de-Marne, this type of scam is becoming increasingly common and sophisticated. Scammers often target vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly, and use a variety of tactics to gain their trust.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing, and no arrests have been made. Guy is eagerly awaiting the trial, hoping to seek compensation for his losses.
