Government Calls for Joint Response After Deadly Flood in Manzanedo, León

The subdelegado del Gobierno in León, Héctor Alaiz, travelled to Manzanedo de Valdueza on Sunday after a sudden torrent of water and landslides swept through the village and surrounding areas of El Bierzo. The disaster claimed the lives of two women and left five others injured, including two children who were taken to Hospital El Bierzo for treatment. Alaiz expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and to the broader community, emphasizing the need for a unified response from all levels of government. ## Immediate Emergency Response Alaiz praised the rapid deployment of emergency services, noting the involvement of the National Police, Ponferrada local police, fire brigades, Civil Protection, and medical teams. He highlighted the “very sad” nature of the day for the municipality, the wider Ponferrada area, the Bierzo region, and the province of León. The subdelegado also commended the solidarity shown by residents, who assisted during the crisis and continued to help with cleanup efforts. ## Coordination Among Institutions The official’s next priority is to “work together with all institutions” to design a coordinated plan that supports affected families and facilitates the recovery of Manzanedo and neighboring villages whose access roads have also been damaged. Alaiz indicated that a technical representative from the Confederación Hidrográfica del Miño-Sil has already visited the site, though precise data on the volume of water released by the storm remains unavailable. ## Links to Last Summer’s Fires During his visit, Alaiz referenced the severe wildfires that scorched the same area on August 15 of the previous year. While he stopped short of confirming a direct causal link, he noted that loss of vegetation can increase runoff and the transport of debris into valley floors, potentially amplifying flood risks. He called for a thorough analysis by relevant authorities to determine the exact causes of the flood and to develop measures that prevent a repeat of such events. ## Outlook and Recommendations Alaiz pointed out that the flood occurred despite an orange-level alert issued by Civil Protection based on AEMET forecasts. He observed that precipitation levels elsewhere in the province did not reach the intensity experienced in the affected valley and in the Bouzas area. Consequently, he urged that the incident be examined in detail to identify any gaps in forecasting, warning, or infrastructure that may have contributed to the tragedy. The subdelegado concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to stand by the victims and to collaborate with regional and local bodies in rebuilding the community. The incident underscores the vulnerability of rural valleys to extreme weather events, especially in regions still recovering from recent wildfires. Ongoing monitoring, improved drainage systems, and coordinated emergency planning are likely to be central themes in the forthcoming joint response.
