## Introduction to the Problem According to a study published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Marine Science, the waters off eastern Greenland are now home to approximately 4,000 humpback whales, 6,000 common minke whales, and 4,500 dwarf minke whales. These species are now feeding regularly in the region, which is a significant change from the past.

## The Impact of Climate Change The phenomenon has been analyzed over the past two decades and coincides with a rise of approximately one degree in sea temperature during the summer months. This gradual increase in temperatures has led to a notable reduction in sea ice since 2000, opening up coastal areas that were previously blocked. The change is not only affecting the whales but also modifying the distribution of their prey, particularly the capelin, which is being forced to move from its usual feeding grounds near Iceland to the Greenland continental shelf.

## The Consequences for the Ecosystem The study explains that the capelin plays a crucial role in connecting the upper and lower levels of the food chain. The arrival of a large number of large predators has introduced a new pressure on the ecosystem that did not exist before. The researchers estimate that the three whale species can consume around one million tons of prey per year during the approximately four months they inhabit these waters, with a significant portion being capelin and krill.

## The Future of the Ecosystem The study points to a rapid "borealization" of the marine ecosystem in eastern Greenland, a process that is causing species from lower latitudes to expand their distribution northward, while Arctic characteristics are retreating. The authors note that this process is driven by a series of factors, primarily the recovery of whale populations that were previously endangered and the transformation of their habitat due to ocean warming and ice loss. The consequence is a reorganization of the relationships between predators and prey, which can affect not only the capelin but also other fish species in the area and the fishing industry as a whole.
